The diagram below illustrates some of the common knots and bends used on vessels.
A hitch is a know that has been tied around an object. If you remove a hitch fromthe object it will unravel and no linger be a knot.
A bend is a knot ustes to tie two ropes together
A splice is when the strands of rope are interwoven to form a string join
